"Interpretation is the key."
—Ussej Padric Bac[src]

Ussej Padric Bac was the Shaman of the Whills and the guardian of the Journal of the Whills in the millennia between the Great Territorial War and the foundation of the New Republic. Ussej was born on Alderaan as the son of Princess Talia Antilles, making him a prince by virtue of lineage; Bac's mother and father were assassinated when he was a baby, so the Jedi Order took him in as one of their own. He and his master, Brarh Kefle, ran from the Second Sith Empire for years in the aftermath of the Jedi Civil War before the Jedi Order was reformed.

As a Jedi, Ussej fought alongside his friend Damien Nightblade during the Great Territorial War, nearly falling to the dark side in the process; his true love, Laili Jeyna Rendar, helped pull him back from the brink. When the war was over, Ussej and Laili ventured to Kal'Shabbol where Ussej became a member of the Bendu Order. Upon his death, Ussej was taken to Ashlan Four where he became the Shaman of the Whills, allowing him to use the time stream to intervene in historical events.

Thousands of years later, Ussej warned Nightblade, who had become the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Plagueis, that allowing Plagueis' apprentice to kill him and become the Dark Lord would result in the beginning of the Apocalypse. Despite Ussej's eleventh hour plea, Plagueis allowed himself to die and the Apocalypse began. Annikin Skywalker, the supposed Chosen One who would be the savior of the galaxy, was born shortly thereafter, and Bac would interact with him in the years that followed. Ussej recounted these interactions to Duseuso, a Whill historian who documented them in the Journal of the Whills.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Ussej Padric Bac was born circa 3,960 BBY on Alderaan as the son of Senator Padric Bac II and Alderaanian Princess Talia Antilles. This made him the Prince of Alderaan by virtue of lineage. He was also a descendant of Jonathan Bac, the first Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, and Jedi Knight Adrian Bac. Sometime following his birth, his parents were killed, leaving Bac as an orphan.[1]

Bac was taken into the Jedi Order following his parents’ deaths. During the Jedi Civil War, he came under the tutelage of Jedi Master Brarh Kefle. In the aftermath of the war, when many Jedi fled into exile to hide from the Second Sith Empire, Bac and Kefle went into hiding on Corellia to avoid being killed by the Sith.[1]

In 3,952 BBY, Bac and his master were involved in a speeder accident in the streets of Corellia. The two were unhurt, though the passengers of the other speeder, Corwin Rendar and his pregnant wife Jeyna Rendar, were severely injured. All four were rushed to the hospital by Stavan Jetzt, a Galactic Republic soldier who had just returned to Corellia after being held as a prisoner of war by the Sith. The Rendars died from their wounds at the hospital, but the doctors were able to save Jeyna’s unborn child, Laili Jeyna Rendar.[1]

Shortly after the incident, the Jedi Order reorganized itself. Bac and Kefle ended their exile and returned to the Order. In the years that followed, Bac became a Jedi Knight.[1]

Great Territorial War[]

Twenty years later, Ussej had become a Jedi Knight and a close friend of fellow Jedi Damien Nightblade;[1] Ussej would later recount that this friendship defined them both for decades. [3] During that time, Stavan Jetzt was elected Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic. Ussej and Nightblade were called, along with a delegation of other Jedi, to Jetzt’s office one week after the Chancellor’s inauguration, where they were told about reports he had been given regarding a situation in the Uvena system. Jetzt believed that a flow of weapons that had been reported indicated the reemergence of the Sith with a new empire. The Jedi were skeptical of the claim, but they agreed to send Ussej and Damien to the Uvena system to investigate it.[1]

Ussej and Damien arrived in the Uvena system and found themselves in the middle of a war between Uvena Prime and Uvena III. When the war ended, they followed the trail of weapons to Korriban, where they discovered that the Sith had orchestrated the Uvena conflict in order to acquire the weapons for themselves. Bac and Nightblade were attacked and were nearly killed trying to escape with the information. They were able to return to Coruscant, however, where Jetzt declared war against the Third Sith Empire, beginning the Great Territorial War.[1]

When the war began, Ussej held a sense of optimism for the future. It was during the war that he met Laili Jeyna Rendar, and he came to fall in love with her. During the war, Ussej became part of a search for a group of ancient relics, ones that supposedly pointed the way to a source of knowledge greater than the Jedi Archives.[1] As the search progressed, Ussej and Damien met an Alsakan priest who warned them that the Apocalypse, an event that would mark the end of the galaxy, was coming and that they would be involved.[3]

The continuing conflict and the search for the relics led to Ussej letting go of his optimistic feelings, becoming hardened by war and conflicted with paranoia;[1] Ussej accused Damien on Onderon of being part of a conspiracy to prevent him from finding the last of the relics.[3] These events nearly turned him to the dark side of the Force.[1]

Life on Kal'Shabbol[]

Despite being at the brink, Ussej was able to resist the dark side with Laili's help. He detached himself from his emotions, causing some strain with his relationship with Laili.[1] Nevertheless, when the war ended, the two settled on Kal'Shabbol in the Unknown Regions, where Laili gave birth to their son, Ussej Padric Bac II.[2] Ussej became a member of the Bendu Order on Kal'Shabbol,[3] eventually earning the rank of Bendu Knight.[2]

Ussej felt that Kal'Shabbol helped him atone for the mistakes he had made during the war, giving him the salvation he desired.[3] After building a home and raising a family on Kal’Shabbol, he ultimately died on the planet, though it was only a mortal death; Ussej transcended reality and was taken to Ashlan Four.[2]

The coming Apocalypse[]

Once on Ashlan Four, Ussej discovered that his destiny was as the Shaman of the Whills, a religious figure that the members of the Order of the Whills had been waiting for. The Whills, who used the time stream that the historical timeline flowed through to view and record galactic history into the Journal of the Whills, were unable to use the time stream to its fullest effect; only the Shaman of the Whills could enter the time stream and interact with historical events. Ussej found that he was able to do this, both as an unseen observer and as an interactive presence. Although he could do so in the past, his present, and the future, he chose only to observe the past, interact in his present, and never view the future.[2]

Ussej lived as the Shaman of the Whills for thousands of years, often taking morning horseback rides when not interacting with historical figures; he never aged during this time, maintaining the appearance of a thirty standard year old Human.[2]

In 922 BBY, the Ophuchi Clan on Tatooine fragmented, and its members spread out across the Outer Rim Territories. To bring them back together, Ussej appeared before the scattered members and led them back to their sanctuary in the Dune Sea on Tatooine. He showed them a cave within the sanctuary, where he explained to them what the destiny of the Ophuchi Clan was.[2]

Circa 241 BBY, the Shaman learned that Damien Nightblade, who years earlier had fallen to the dark side after learning the secrets of immortality—similar to Ussej—in a failed attempt to save his lover from dying, had taken the name Darth Plagueis and become the Dark Lord of the Sith. Ussej warned Plagueis about the coming Apocalypse, saying that it would be Plagueis’ eventual apprentice who would kill Plagueis and bring the Apocalypse, but Plagueis dismissed the notion of a set future as a delusion.[3]

Time of awakening[]

Ussej continued to watch over Plagueis for the next two hundred years. In 41 BBY, as Plagueis had decided to allow his apprentice to kill him, Ussej attempted to intervene, pleading with Plagueis in the Sith temple on Dathomir to not let his apprentice become the Dark Lord of the Sith. Plagueis ignored Ussej's warnings and pleas, choosing to die at the hands of his apprentice. When Plagueis died and the new Dark Lord came to power, the Apocalypse began just as Ussej—and the Alsakan priest before him—had warned.[3]
