Luke Lars was a moisture farmer on Tatooine, the father of Owen Lars, and the adoptive father of Michael Lars.

Biography

Early life and service

Luke Lars was born on Tatooine in 73 BBY. He was raised on a moisture farm outside of Anchorhead Station. He was an idealist, believing that the Outer Rim Territories would be better without the tyranny of the Hutt Lords. When he was old enough, Lars fought in the Rim Wars, a rebellion against the rule of the Hutts.

During the Battle of Picon, Luke was captured by a Hutt soldier who thought that the capture of a rebel would earn him a promotion. His fellow rebels later rescued him, as did a man Lars claimed he did not know the identity of.

Family life

After the war, Luke returned to Tatooine and became jaded by the rebel cause, coming to believe that fighting against the Hutts was not worth it. He married Aika Lars and had one son, Owen Lars; by virtue of marriage, he became the brother-in-law of Deacon Darklighter.

Aika died after Owen was born, though Deacon remained involved in their family’s lives. Luke adopted a second son, Michael Lars, who was born to a woman named Shmi whom Luke had known. Luke carried a secret about Michael that no one, not even Michael himself, knew about.

As the years went on, Luke raised Owen and Michael, with the older Owen helping to raise Michael as well. Darklighter remained close with the family. He joined the Hutt military and rose the rank of Colonel, being placed in charge of all Hutt military forces on the planet. His position of influence allowed him to get Owen and Michael out of trouble on many occasions, much to Luke’s relief—though Luke still saw the Hutt Lords as a group that did not care about anyone but themselves.

Personality and traits

Despite living in the harsh environment of Tatooine under the rule of the Hutts, Luke was a warm and kindhearted man, having gained those traits from his mother. He had a close relationship with his sons, particularly Michael, whom he worked to impart on the qualities of sincerity, kindness, and generosity.

Behind the scenes

Cliegg Lars is the Alternative Star Wars Saga version of the canon character of the same name. Developed by Brandon Rhea, author of Star Wars: Episode I - The Chosen One, the character is directly based on the character Cliegg Lars who appeared in the film Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, although Rhea’s character was written to have more importance in the story due to the increased focus Rhea is putting on the Lars family, as well as Lars’s involvement in Annikin Skywalker’s destiny.

In Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Lars was portrayed by actor Jack Thompson. When Rhea developed his own version of the character for the Alternative Star Wars Saga, he chose to replace Thomspon's likeness with that of John Schneider. This was due to the fatherly qualities Rhea felt Schneider would bring to the character. A photo manipulation for the character was created by Susan Donnam, who also serves as the editor for Rhea's novel.
