"You're the shatterpoint for everything destiny says is supposed to happen."
Ussej Padric Bac[src]

Darth Plagueis, born Damien Nightblade and also known as Darth Plagueis the Wise, was the Grandmaster of the Jedi Order during the Great Territorial War and, later, the Dark Lord of the Sith. As a Jedi, Nightblade was a friend of Ussej Padric Bac, whom he participated with in the first conflict of the Great Territorial War. Nightblade participated in a number of other conflicts following the Great Territorial War.

In the years that followed, Nightblade learned the secrets of immortality in the hopes of preventing his lover from dying, though he was unable to prevent her death. He did, however, prolong his own life, allowing him to become immortal. Because of his lover’s death, he fell to the dark side and became the temporary apprentice of Darth Erilis. Circa 241 BBY, Nightblade became Darth Plagueis and took the mantle of Dark Lord of the Sith. He trained an apprentice sometime thereafter. Plagueis’ disciple killed him in 41 BBY, an act that started the Apocalypse as Ussej Padric Bac had warned him about hours before Plagueis' death.

BiographyEdit

Early lifeEdit

Damien Nightblade was born circa 3,970 BBY on the planet Shaderon. Sometime thereafter, he was taken into the Jedi Order on Coruscant. He became a Jedi Knight in the years that followed.[2]

Great Territorial WarEdit

Following the inauguration of Stavan Jetzt as Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, Jetzt called a delegation of Jedi to his office, including Nightblade and his best friend, fellow Jedi Knight Ussej Padric Bac. During the meeting, Jetzt expressed the belief that the Sith had reemerged following their disappearance in the wake of the Jedi Civil War. The Jedi were skeptical of the claims, but they decided to send Nightblade and Bac to investigate the situation.[2]

The investigation proceeded until Nightblade and Bac found themselves in the middle of a war between the planets Uvena Prime and Uvena III. At the war's end, the two Jedi followed a trail of weapons to Korriban, the Sith homeworld, where they discovered that the Sith had orchestrated the Uvena conflict in order to gain the weapons for themselves. Nightblade and Bac barely made it off of Korriban alive, but they were able to return to Coruscant, the capital of the Republic, and inform Jetzt of what happened. Shortly thereafter, Jetzt declared war on the Sith, beginning the Great Territorial War.[2]

Nightblade ascended to the rank of Jedi Grandmaster sometime during the war, becoming the leader of the Jedi Order.[2] Around that time, Nightblade and Bac were warned by an Alsakan priest about the Apocalypse. This event, which later began in 41 BBY, was believed by the priest to be what would ultimately destroy the galaxy. It was also during this time that Nightblade and Bac began a search for a number of ancient relics.[1]

Towards the end of the war, Bac developed a paranoid personality, going so far as to nearly turn to the dark side of the Force. One incident that occurred because of this was on Onderon, where Bac accused Nightblade of being part of a conspiracy to keep him from finding the last of the ancient relics. Nightblade tried to calm him down, but Bac instead warned him not to lecture him. Nightblade came to feel that Bac had chosen a holy question and a prophecy over him, something that strained their friendship.[1]

Secrets of immortalityEdit

After the Great Territorial War ended, Nightblade went on to fight in a number of other conflicts. He fought to defend his people's right to exist, and later helped fight to secure the love that Ussej Padric Bac II, Bac's son, had for the daughter of a tyrant in the Unknown Regions. During these wars, he came to believe he would die in battle, something that the fighting had prepared him for.[1]

It was during this time that his lover, a planetary princess, came to him with a vision of her own death. Knowing that her visions always came true, as she was a seer, Nightblade swore that he would find a way to stop those he cared about from dying. He eventually discovered the secrets of immortality, allowing him to become immortal, but he was unable to save the princess from dying. He came to believe that his failure was a result of his own weakness. His inability to save the princess caused him to begin falling to the dark side of the Force.[1]

Following the princess' death, Nightblade returned to Shaderon, which Bac felt was the former Jedi Grandmaster's rightful place. As time passed on, however, Bac came to believe that the planet had somehow twisted Nightblade's mind, furthering his fall to the dark side.[1]

Fall to the dark sideEdit

"Once you start down the dark path, it will forever dominate your destiny."
—Darth Plagueis[src]

In the years that followed, Nightblade found out that Bac had become the Shaman of the Order of the Whills, which also gave him the powers of immortality. Becoming the shaman allowed Bac to be a herald of prophecy, knowing about future events before they happened. One of these events was the Apocalypse which, like the Alsakan priest years earlier, Bac warned Nightblade about. Nightblade was skeptical about the future being set in stone, but as the years went on he began to realize the possibility of destiny being true and that he had been unknowingly led down a certain path by the Force.[1]

Circa 241 BBY, Nightblade solidified his fall to the dark side and became the apprentice of Darth Erilis, the Dark Lady of the Sith. As a member of the Order of the Sith Lords, Nightblade took on the name Darth Plagueis. His tutelage with her was short lived and he became the Dark Lord of the Sith shortly thereafter, an event that Bac also found out about.[1]

Death and aftermathEdit

"My fate is sealed, not because someone wrote it thousands of years ago, but because I want this. I'm tired, and now I'm done."
—Darth Plagueis explains his desire to die[src]

Sometime prior to 41 BBY, Plagueis took on and trained an apprentice. During their time together, the two lived in a Sith academy on Dathomir. Plagueis knew that his apprentice would likely one day kill him and become Dark Lord of the Sith as dictated by Sith customs, something he had prepared himself for leading up to the inevitable event.[1]

In 41 BBY, Plagueis knew that his apprentice was preparing to kill him. Plagueis accepted the fact that he was going to die and even secretly welcomed it, having decided he no longer wanted to be the Dark Lord of the Sith, nor did he want to continue living. Hours before Plagueis' death, Bac appeared before Plagueis and pleaded with him to reconsider his decision. The shaman told him that Plagueis himself was the shatterpoint of the Apocalypse and that he could stop it if he prevented his apprentice from being the Dark Lord. Despite Bac's insistence, Plagueis refused to change his mind.[1]

It was only hours later when Plagueis was murdered by his apprentice while he was sleeping; Plagueis' apprentice stabbed him through the heart, awakening him from his sleep before ultimately dying. Plagueis was confident, however, that the new Dark Lord would regret not facing him in combat, and that he did not possess the secret of immortality that Plagueis did.[1]

The new Dark Lord's first act was to meet with his own apprentice, Darth Maul. The Dark Lord ordered Maul to go to Tatooine and kill Shmi Skywalker-Lars and her unborn child, Annikin Skywalker, as the child was destined to become the Chosen One who could kill the Dark Lord and end the Apocalypse. As this meeting took place, Bac returned to Plagueis' chamber and collected his body, which had been left to rot, before saying goodbye to his former friend and disappearing with the body.[1]
